Parrots are some of the best known birds in the world. There are about 315 species of parrots found worldwide both in rainforests and other environments. Parrots range in size from the 39" (1 m), 3-pound (1.4 kg) Hyacinthine macaw of Brazil to the Pygmy parrot which rarely reaches 3.5 inches (9 cm) and only weighs about .5 ounces (15 g). Parrots feed on seeds, fruits, grass, leaves, and plant shoots and use their strong beak to crack hard shells, grind their food, and as a third limb for climbing. Parrots are popular in the pet trade, something which has made some species rare in the wild.
